Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles Tendinitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon which runs from the heel and connects to the calf muscles. The inflammation can result in pain and stiffness in the joint and in more serious cases can lead to tendon ruptures.

Common Causes

  • Sudden increase in intensity of activity
  • Flat Feet/Fallen Arches. People with flat feet or fallen arches will put further strain on the tendon
  • Age-as you age the tendon is more susceptible to injury

                                Common Signs & Symptoms

                                • Mild ache in the back of the lower leg
                                • More severe pain after prolonged activity
                                • Tenderness or stiffness first thing in the morning easing after mild activity

                                                            Condition Management

                                                            • Seek professional advice from a physiotherapist to have a proper assessment and rule out other similar conditions
                                                            • Provided there are no ruptures, then conservative management will be advised, with a focus on education. Learning to modify activity during flare ups as well as progressively loading the tendon to improve it’s ability to adapt to forces placed on it
                                                            • Taping, use of hot and cold therapy and splints/supports may be advised especially during the reduced loading period of recovery
                                                            • If a rupture has occurred, then surgery may be required depending on the level of rupture
