What is Side Strain?
A side strain is where there is a tear in any of the muscles down the side of the lower back. In this area there are lots of big, powerful muscles that are used in many sports, which can become damaged with repeated use. If the muscle is used too much or stretched beyond where it normally goes this will cause pain in this area of the back. The common muscles that this happens to are quadratus lomborum, latissimus dorsi and the oblique abdominals.
Common causes of this injury:
- Using the arm to forcibly throw something
- Repeatedly throwing anything with the same arm
- Stretching over to the side repeatedly

Common Signs & Symptoms
Following this injury the common signs and symptoms are:
- Pain and a feeling of tightness at the side of the back, below the ribs
- Pain on leaning away from the injured side
- Pain on throwing
- What should be done following this injury:
- Consult your GP or chartered physiotherapist
- Keep your back moving gently
- Use ice or a reusable cold pack to help ease pain in the affected area (the recommended time is 10 minutes on with 1 hour off). Never apply ice directly to the skin.
